BONNIE AND FRED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
Hyderabad
At right are five of the 18 older boys who have come up through the Child Haven program and are now in vocational study programs. A number of these boys are living in small groups on their own near their schools in Hyderabad. They visit the Home often, especially when Bonnie is there. As a rule, they are polite and hard-working, and value the education being provided for them by Canadian individuals who sponsor their studies.
One night Bonnie and Fred were returning home from Hyderabad with Nicky, an Australian volunteer. They were crammed into the back of a three-wheel autoricksha, (only supposed to carry two passengers). A dude on a motorcycle was passing, and asked the driver where we were going. The driver told him, and he slowed down to follow us. Nicky said, "I don't like this. We'd better get one of our boys to come home with us - they live near here."
So she told the driver where to go to the apartment not far away. The motorcycle followed. Nicky got out of the ricksha, ran and banged on the door. When two of our young sleepy-eyed guys came out, the motorcycle sped off. The guys climbed on in front, one on each side of the driver, and the overloaded ricksha laboriously made its way to Child Haven. Then it took the two boys back to the city.
